Virtual Volumes Vendor Status - April 2015

vvol-vendorsVMware vSphere 6.0 with the new Virtual Volumes (VVol) storage architecture is in the market since one month now. Many vendors are working on the new technlogy and have announced to support VVols for their storage arrays. This post takes a look on the current status and what vendors are supported today:

  • HP
  • NEC
  • IBM
  • NetApp
  • SANBlaze

 

Hewlett-Packard
HP was one out of four vendors with day one VVol support. The high-end flash optimized storage 3PAR StoreServ is currently the only product ready for VVol.

IBM
IBM was one out of four vendors with day one VVol support. Their XIV Storage System is currently the only product ready for VVol. IBM SAN Volume Controller (SVC) is planned to support VVol in the future.

NEC
NEC was one out of four vendors with day one VVol support. Currently it's the only vendor that has VVol support for entry and low-end storage arrays.

SANBlaze
SANBlaze was one out of four vendors with day one VVol support. It's not a common storage vendor, but the leader in storage emulation.

NetApp
NetApp was the 5th vendor that appeared in VMwares HCL to support VVols. NetApp was a very early VVol adopter and the only vendor that had a virtual Clustered Data ONTAP simulators available for customers, to set up a virtual environment and try VVols.

EMC
At the moment there is no VVol support for EMC storage systems. EMC has proven their VVol capabilities in demonstration videos for their VMAX and VNX products. We will probably also see VVol support for ScaleIO and XtremIO in the future.

Dell
At the moment there is no VVol support for Dell storage systems. Dell will probably support VVols for their PS and SC Series arrays (EqualLogic and Compellent). They had a VVol HOL for their EqualLogic storage during VMworld and provides many demonstration videos.

Hitachi
At the moment there is no VVol support for Hitachi storage systems. They are planning to support VVols for their HNAS 4000 and VSP G1000 in the future.

Tintri
At the moment there is no VVol support for Tintri VMstore. Tintri has announced support for vSphere 6 using NFS and VVols in a future release.

Nimble Storage
At the moment there is no VVol support for Nimble Storage. Nimble Storage has announce support for VVols and proved their capabilities with Hands-on Labs during VMworld.

Atlantis
At the moment there is no VVol support from Atlanti. They announced VVol support for their USX software-defined storage platform within 90 days of the vSphere 6 GA date.

Fujitsu
At the moment there is no VVol support for Fujitsu storage systems. They announced VVol support for their ETERNUS DX storage platform.

SolidFire
At the moment there is no VVol support from SolidFire. They announced VVol support for their products and provided a technical demonstration.

Pure Storage
At the moment there is no VVol support for Pure Storage arrays. They announced VVol support for their FA-400 series flash arrays.

NexGen
At the moment there is no VVol support from NexGen. They announced VVol support for their products and provided a technical demonstration.

  1. VVol support for DataCore SANsymphony-V will be released next week with version 10 PSP4. This will bring VVol support to ALL storage hardware from ALL storage vendors behind DataCore.
