VCP6 Delta Part 1 - vSphere 6 Summary

VMware VCP6-DCV Delta Exam Differences

VMwares exams for their latest VMware Certified Professional 6 Data Center Virtualization (VCP6-DVC) certification are available in 2 weeks. If you are already certified, VMware makes it easier to upgrade to the latest version. Without any further requirements, you can register for the VCP6 Delta Exam. Please remember that VCP-level certifications will expire after 2 years.

First available appointment for both exams is August 30, 2015.

Match Linux SCSI Devices (sdX) to Virtual Disks in VMware

This post explains how to correlate SCSI devices within a Linux virtual machine to the virtual disk configured in the Virtual Machine. This can be accomplished by comparing the SCSI ID listed the Linux Guest OS and the virtual machine configuration in the vSphere client.match-linux-scsi-devices

In the vSphere Client disks are numbered without any reference to their SCSI ID. Linux operating systems numbers disks based on their SCSI ID and in order of appearance. Usually, the first disk is /dev/sda, the second /dev/sdb and so on. But if you want to remove a disk for example you want to make sure to identify the disk correctly.

"Unsupported SVGA driver" during Windows 10 upgrade in VMware Workstation

windows-10-upgradeUpgrading Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 to Windows 10 in VMware Workstation fails with the following error message:

Unsupported SVGA driver

The issue only applies to the Microsoft Update Validation Tool which has problems with the VMware SVGA driver. To resolve this issue, use the Windows 10 ISO to upgrade your Virtual Machine.

VMware Homeserver – ESXi on 5th Gen Intel NUC

Intel NUCs are not officially supported by VMware but they are very widespread in many homlabs or test environments. They are small, silent, transportable and have a very low power consumption, making it a great server for your homelab. I've posted a preview at the beginning of the year and got my first 5th Gen NUC up and running in February. Today all versions of the NUC, including the flagship with the i7 CPU, are available in the market. Time to give it a more detailed review

5th Gen Intel NUCs are available with an Intel i3, i5 or i7 CPU. The Intel i3 and i5 are available with and without 2.5" slot where the i7 is only available with 2.5". With the NUC5i5MYHE there is also a i5 model with a faster vPro CPU.
